Deaf Niche Minnesota Timberwolves and UCLA graduate Zach LaVine has a program with The Metro Deaf School
Zach LaVine, the basketball player on the Minnesota Timberwolves, revealed that he learned ASL in high school and has been involved in the Deaf community since then.
The kids are excited as he enters the school and he greets them, interacting with them as the after school activities progress. In the video, they’re decorating cookies, playing games, and learning songs in ASL with Zach participating in all of this. Here’s what he had to say:
“It’s just a lot of fun and I’m really glad that they get to be involved with that. I took sign language in high school, so I’ve been involved with that community for a while now. It’s just really cool to have them involved, help them out and to benefit them.
While taking sign language in high school, one of our assignments was to go out and participate in the deaf community, so I really got to know a lot of the group from that. I felt like they needed a little bit more of a voice, because people treat them different just because they’re hearing impaired. You know, just trying to show people that they should be treated equally. It’s really cool.”*
Zach LaVine is known for his recent award-winning slam dunk that is comparable to Michael Jordan’s. He played for UCLA’s team before being hired to play professionally for Minnesota’s Timerwolves.
