Deaf Niche A Sign Language was created out of necessity in this Arab village
It was discovered in a remote Arab village that deafness was a high occurrence in the population (4% of the village’s population are born deaf.)
As a result, a complete sign language was developed in one generation!
To best understand how amazing this is, the world’s sign languages take many generations to fully develop and spread out to be used and understood by everyone. This village, the Al-Sayyid Bedouin, did it in one generation.
How did this happen? Because of the village’s unusually high percentage of deaf members in the community, all the hearing members learned Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language to fully include their fellow deaf villagers.
In small communities, it is absolutely necessary for every member to participate and no one can be left out. The village depends on everyone in it. With a high incidence of deafness in the Al-Sayyid Bedouin community, Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language is an absolute necessity for communication.
